Two block explorers shut down due to lack of funding. Only possible on Algorand.

This is a really dumb question, but what’s the business model for block explorers?

Ad based (pageviews) + selling white label explorer-as-a-service to teams building new chains.

1)haven’t adblockers killed this? 2) how large is the new-chain market? It seems like block explorers fall into the public good category and a good candidate for funding directly from the protocol Tbh, if Etherscan went down I’d be lost 😂

1) they mostly have. Afaik most of etherscan revenue is from 2) https://etherscan.io/eaas They're known to charge up to $1m per chain. Loads of new chains/L2s coming out all the time so sizeable market. Definitely good candidate for public goods funding. For normal users they literally *are* the defacto ledger/chain.
