Charlie Kauffman writes metafiction better than anyone i have ever read. It's a style i love to write and admire what has essentially been a constant boundary pushing output by him. I'm thinking of ending things and synecdoche new york are both absolute masterpieces. In fiction I admire Cormac McCarthy for his ability to make the brutal poetic, Ian McEwan for his grace in both sentence and plot construction, and Nabokov who could write twenty chapters about paint drying and still make it interesting. There are many more I'm sure I've forgotten.

I haven't read Nabokov but "could write twenty chapters about paint drying and still make it interesting" is a compelling recommendation for sure. The world needs more writers like that.
