Good points all. I just get a little twitchy sometimes because of the prevalence of "if you just work hard and stick with it, YOU TOO can do this!!!!!" narratives.
Well, maybe. But also, maybe not. And if not, it might not be your own fault.
There's sooo much bait-and-switch BS out there that preys on creatives hoping to make a living from their creative work. I know countless creatives who work hard, think strategically, and all the rest, but still struggle for structural reasons or other reasons beyond their control. You can do everything right, but if the stars aren't aligned (e.g., your timing isn't so lucky) you'll still struggle.
So I think the responsible thing to do is add some qualifiers to these pep talks. YMMV, "don't compare your insides to others' outsides" and all that. 1 reply
