Creating a new collection, and how choosing NOT to "Mint first edition" (thus opening up initial NFT to First Minter,) preserves your ability to add to the collection in the future using either approach.

Sounds like it. What we're talking about is expressed in the Zora support docs as: "All editions uploaded in one batch will have the same settings and mint configuration." But the way @seeingblue described it above makes it a lot clearer! Just created my first free collection and left the box unchecked.
