cont'd from above: 'The Farcaster Settlement'

The village needs all kinds of people. It needs poets & writers like @arjantupan @danicaswanson & @pichi . It needs peacekeepers & social facilitators like @ted . It needs town criers like @nounishprof & @adrienne . And it needs lots of support from 'regular people.'

The point of my illustration to this person was to help them feel that the way to find your place on FC is to serve the village--to do something that helps the good of what's happening here. 

That's how I found my place & call this settlement home. I dabbled, but eventually took something I like & am good at & filled a need (in a small way) to serve the village. 

I don't know if the illustration helped the person who was struggling & wanting to give up on FC. I don't know if it's even the right illustration for FC, but it made me 'feel' what it looks like to find your place on FC. And working out ideas is what /firstdraft is for. 

If you got this far, I'd welcome other illustrations or ideas.

Great analogy, and I appreciate the emphasis on service for the greater good. Fill a need in the village by doing something you like and are good at.

That's why I made sure to add the "slowly but surely" caveat. It's anyone's guess when it'll actually come together, because the grant writing class will have to take priority until June.

But I'll work on it whenever I'm able!

I'm well-aligned with Brad's "serve a need in the village" framing here too.

I agree with the general idea of paying it forward (ideally in gift circles where reciprocity is built-in) but I think it's also important to point out that there's a certain economic and cash-flow baseline that must be met before people are in a position to "not focus on money." 

Extractive economic patterns are already normalized, which means some people are structurally excluded from using their gifts in the ways they're best at. 

Retro-rewards are great, but they don't address this aspect of the "village service" model.

this is the way to go. very synchronous with some thoughts and ideas I am marinating this week.

Took me a good year to switch from old web2 (and corporate) mindset where I come from.

The key is to do something here you love, are good at and the village needs. Don't focus on money (the 4th circle in IKIGAI) bc if the first 3 align then most likely (if not guaranteed) you will receive some retro-active rewards.

Pay forward.

I think that's OK, and even preferable in many cases. The villages could be recognized as nodes that serve specific needs in the larger network, but by staying small deliberately, they can still retain their cozy-corner approach.

I love this … but I have to say it is and always will be the smaller corner of any network 🙄
