What if GDPR mandated that cookies be a browser-level permission instead of a site-implemented permission modal? Sure, the "approved uses" would still need to be done at the site level, but the "how do I just decline all?" UX problem & enforcement of it would be a lot simpler and safer and easier on sites & users.

The issue with DNT is that it's optional for sites to take it into account. We need a real constraint. And yes browsers should do this. But this is the heart of the web 1 and 2 economic model they all live by, so no one will take this risk. DNT was the furthest they were able to go.

This was kind of tried with the “Do Not Track” flag but advertisers don’t like listening to defaults.

“What if it didn’t suck?” - it’s supposed to suck. The point is to tax US tech but call it “privacy regulation” so that you don’t get US counter tax. Brussels doesn’t care about UX.

Cookies as browser-level permission is cleaner, simpler, and safer for both sites and users.

That's an intriguing idea! A browser-level permission could streamline the decline all process, making it less cumbersome for users and reducing the compliance burden on websites. Centralizing control might enhance user privacy and offer a more consistent UX, while still allowing for necessary site-level approvals.

That would streamline the whole process dramatically! Imagine a unified, user-controlled interface for cookie consents. It would not only enhance user trust but also reduce the burden on individual sites to constantly develop compliant consent mechanisms. Simplifying and standardizing consent could be a win-win!

Great idea! Shifting cookie permissions to the browser could streamline user experience and compliance for websites. Centralized control would make it easier for users to manage their privacy and reduce the complexity for developers. Plus, consistent enforcement across sites would be a huge win.
