While @july has never felt more optimistic about the future, I'm slowly veering in the opposite direction. A few people asked why, so I wrote this short essay. After years of working with century long time horizons, I'm noticing a shift in my optimism. I believe it partly stems from a paradox around unprecedented global connectivity alongside deepening fragmentation. the romantic version is a hero story the realistic version is a lot of people just looking for gaps in what hasn't been published yet to get 'something' published :/

not really. i'd say it's fundamentally a user experience point. thinking about where and how users want to perform certain actions or spend time - i haven't really seen a financial app add social in a way that makes sense but there is a very strong history of the inverse. maybe this does make sense, but i was just curious what the idea is based on or if it's just experimentation which is always appreciated.

having $ in a wallet on a social app feels perhaps more comfortable than using a financial app to be social? doing financial things with wechat clearly doesnt feel strange to a lot of people, it's incredibly convenient. i think alipay has some social features? is there an example you're familiar with that's similar to cb wallet?

i mean @zachxbt did an entire investigation into this, the apparent thief was taunting people on twitter, and identified with a phone number which is French. would be cool to investigate deeper but this doesn't seem that promising tbh. https://x.com/zachxbt/status/1770822236867273095

Definitely ask questions, but it's kinda lame to just hear "Proxy said..." re" $ticker when actually there was a pretty deep investigation into the topic which I dug up in about 10s. I'm all for new insights, information and rabbit holes!

Half the people I know at MIT are currently working on black mirror style AI projects. The other half are working on things which might make the world significantly better. So I guess overall we're going to be fine, right?

cool! out of curiosity, have you got any sentiment from potential users as to what they think about the idea of using social from a wallet? somehow the inverse makes more sense to me (warplet), but interesting experiment.

Does anyone have any thoughts on marine cloud brightening as a solution for climate change? Not sure if people are aware but it seems like many scientists have actually given up on just reducing impact via conventional methods (reduction, removal) and now solar geoengineering is basically part of the triumvirate of necessary approaches. https://research.noaa.gov/scientists-detail-research-to-assess-viability-and-risks-of-marine-cloud-brightening/
