While @july has never felt more optimistic about the future, I'm slowly veering in the opposite direction. A few people asked why, so I wrote this short essay. After years of working with century long time horizons, I'm noticing a shift in my optimism. I believe it partly stems from a paradox around unprecedented global connectivity alongside deepening fragmentation. @gmo and @zaranotthestore.eth basically kept these guys in business in 2023 i remember going once and refusing to buy anything as the prices were so silly. the architecture is pretty sick though.

very true. no one cared about where I studied when I was working or doing my own thing only seems to matter in academia itself or maybe raising out of university - didn’t realise till I got here how many funds there are that only engage with mit/harvard grads

came into the lab this morning to find a group of 10 year olds learning about training ml models. on one hand, i was kind of awestruck at how amazing that is. as i walked towards my office i started thinking about where i grew up, where even today many kids at that age are struggling with basic maths and reading. it made me wonder how we ever get the future to be more evenly distributed.
