i stopped in at a curatorial space today, and learned some things about traditional indonesian textile: 1. no current indigenous fibres are used (nearly all imported cotton yarns) 2. there is no continuity of knowledge in natural dyeing 3. whole bolts of dyed and unpatterned cloth are rare 4. there is a yarn mafia controlling access to the best yarns

i think if you are a quality-focused small weaver you are more interested in understanding how to operate outside of the yarn mafia than joining it the freedom to pursue different ideas of quality
