I just realized that if I find a couple of like-minded folk on @farcaster who migrated from Twitter earlier than I did, and follow all of their follows, my TL dramatically improves. 

Sharing this one weird trick for other new migrants.

The other thing to try is scoping some channels and following posters that you like. Back in the day you could just follow everyone but sadly I think that might be a terrible idea now

it sucks but it is getting better. degen.tips is the site that explains it and lets you see your allocation. There is a bot too that if you follow will post your remaining allowance as a reply eventually, generally 10-15 minutes later
