when funding new wallets, having to distinguish between L1 ETH and Base ETH is totally unacceptable UX. 

let’s get this abstraction pattern over and done with.

In 2025 I really hope this isn't an issue anymore, though I can imagine it's still confusing for people new to crypto

For new people, it really is confusing. But I don't think that will change. New users will get used to it just like we did.
