practical things I've found to be helpful. 
- delete app from phone 
- use something like BlockSite on desktop to block it for sessions
- prune algo as much as you can. I mute, block accounts regularly and it helps.

re popularity. It will never be as popular as facebook/instagram but it is the arena for certain groups of people and I don't know of anything that comes close to competing with it in that regard.
