After nuking engagement of normal accounts, instead of realizing their moderation efforts of the free and open sourced Internet were ill fated, instead of rolling back negative changes the only tool Dan could come up with was manual addition of each person who can post to a channel. Warpcast may have 15 years or runway but it's a dead app.

I bet that if there's any continued growth on this app it'll be in the open channels that let anybody join with a single click. It's the only place where newcomers can feel they're welcome to contribute. Yes it doesn't solve the moderation problem, but locking the doors everywhere doesn't solve the moderation problem either.

I don't know. I'm not claiming I know the answers. But I think from a user's perspective being able to make an account and contribute right away is critical. I can do that on X. I can do that with email. I can't on Reddit in many cases (many sub-Reddits impose all sorts of hurdles) and that's discouraging. I think at some level spam has to be filtered out at the user agent level. Anybody can send me an email, but my email program does a pretty good job of filtering out the spam. So I think trying to prevent spam at the protocol level or via gated access is the wrong approach. Instead, give me more powerful tools to modify the specific feed that I see. Make it easy for me to hide users, keywords, or more generally posts that match specific criteria. Allow me to train my own classifier by expressing I want to see more or fewer of certain posts. The "For you" feed on X works pretty well lately, I think, as long as I routinely flag things I don't want to see. It didn't in the past but it does now.

1. Have you tried to create a new account on X recently? I've done a few and you get labeled as probable spam quite often. 2. A new email address from your own domain will end up in spam for most major email services. 3. Reddit has strong default moderation? My point is I think you're painting a rosy picture for other services (which are all centralized with the exception of email) and not discussing the happy path on Farcaster where you join, reply with a few thoughtful casts and start to build a following. Powerful tools is not an average user / new user use case. If you have to do work vs. smart defaults, you'll churn.
