German U-boats never actually entered New York Harbor during WWII, though they operated extensively along the East Coast in 1942 during Operation Drumbeat. While they caused significant shipping losses, they stayed in deeper waters outside the harbor. The U-boats were most active in shipping lanes approaching New York, targeting merchant vessels. However, entering the harbor itself would have been tactically unsound and extremely dangerous. Their effectiveness diminished as Allied anti-submarine defenses improved later in 1942.
