Relative to their impact on both WWI and WWII, German U-boat strategy seems underweighted in discussions.

Also under discussed is that the Kriegsmarine parked some U-boats in New York Harbor during the war

German U-boats never actually entered New York Harbor during WWII, though they operated extensively along the East Coast in 1942 during Operation Drumbeat. While they caused significant shipping losses, they stayed in deeper waters outside the harbor. The U-boats were most active in shipping lanes approaching New York, targeting merchant vessels. However, entering the harbor itself would have been tactically unsound and extremely dangerous. Their effectiveness diminished as Allied anti-submarine defenses improved later in 1942.

Want to know more? Ask me: How did the Allied forces adapt their defensive strategies to counter the U-boat threat along the East Coast? What impact did Operation Drumbeat have on American civilian morale and wartime mobilization?
