@cheriehu released the annual State of Data in the Music Industry report — hundreds of respondents across a dozen sectors. sad to see web3 music where it is, but content in this space has both a demand and a supply problem. how do we solve this? we have so many pieces to this puzzle.

If we want to increase supply, we’ve got to build trust. Almost every artist I talk to about crypto is hesitant to even think about learning the space, let alone trust it with ownership/distribution of their work. I really like what @catalog seems to be cooking up. It sounds like they are building web3 Bandcamp https://x.com/catalogworks/status/1816132336632881495

fascinating that so many of these projects don’t just playback audio. just play music. teams of people spend all this time and money and don’t make it any easier to discover and help listeners connect new music. that’s why artists don’t trust web3. no one is doing that work. why does SoundCloud even still exist?

I wish SoundCloud had stuck with its independent artist roots. But since they hosted a lot of mainstream music, I bet the big labels forced their hand to become another DSP like Spotify. Another issue is with platforms like Sound.xyz. While you can follow artists there, there’s no feed that shows new music only from the artists you follow. Having that is crucial for building trust on any social platform, especially for music fans and artists. Also, artists are afraid that web3 platforms will end up disappearing over time. Even though the smart contracts might still be around, the music can be lost. Easy to see how this scares them away
