I imagine that by “society” you mean the US, which I cannot comment on. But I’ve lived long enough in dry parts of the Middle East and Asia (no alcohol, no weed, let alone harder drugs) that… I’ve warmed up to the societal benefits of mass abstinence from substances (even if forced, in these cases).

It didn’t affect me. I could still have the occasional drink & I don’t need the other stuff. OTOH no drunk driving, no alcohol-fueled domestic violence, no opioid epidemic, no broken families from addiction and substance abuse.
