It’s been a while since I was hiring engineers… any more recent tips for increasing gender diversity in applicant pool?

The times I've had luck in hiring engineers that weren't cis men have been times I throttled hiring process enough to actively and directly reach out to more diverse candidates. A lot of the time those convos are appreciated and can result in referrals even if that individual isn't interested. It's labor intensive.

I am a cis man, so maybe your experience will be different. My wife is also an engineer and she has slightly better luck hiring diverse candidates (more opportunities and better conversion), but it's still a slog. We've spent a lot of time talking about it.

Due you think part of the difficulty is the risk of start ups vs established companies? Or is this hiring for diverse candidates at any sized company?

I've hired for engineering at 1-90 employee startups and at a 15k person enterprise and ran into the same basic issues at all of them. It was slightly easier to hire diverse candidates at larger companies though, presumably because of the lessened risk profile.
