It’s been a while since I was hiring engineers… any more recent tips for increasing gender diversity in applicant pool?

Reaching out & posting in /boysclub and /shefi discords (happy to do it on behalf) Reaching out to people who are already in the field, they might no someone even if they aren't interested Creating a roledex of all diverse candidates even if they say not interested now, build that network to outreach in the future

I think these few tips might help. * Use gender-neutral language in job descriptions and applications to attract a broader range of candidates. * Offer Flexible work arrangements like remote work, parental leave, and flexible hours to attract a diverse range of candidates. What's your view on this?

I think @polluterofminds is already taking the right approach here (go to where the candidates are) I’d try finding the women’s group for whatever programming language you’re working in and start there (eg women who go for go engineers) elpha.com is another possibility

I have done some reading on gender stereotypes (no expert) but research from the UK showed girls more likely to study Physics at a higher level if there were images of females in their textbooks. Can you have a female engineer in your job ad image? @polluterofminds

The times I've had luck in hiring engineers that weren't cis men have been times I throttled hiring process enough to actively and directly reach out to more diverse candidates. A lot of the time those convos are appreciated and can result in referrals even if that individual isn't interested. It's labor intensive.

Recently advertised an IRL role with full time/ school hours / school term-time working only options to enable parents of all genders to apply. Got about 10x more applicants than we would usually get. Lots of people value flexibility, often those with caring responsibilities @polluterofminds

Consider hiring someone not quite at the staff level and mentoring them. Hiring women doesn't fix the problem industry-wide... you're essentially just stealing women engineers from another company. Putting effort into shaping female engineers with less experience does address that problem.
