There should be a word with a positive connotation for when you’re better than 99% of the population at something but among people who actually do it you’re mid, like being a man who can bench 225 or run a 7 minute mile at 40.

Running a 7min mile is not better then 99% at 40… maybe sub 6:00 or 5:30. Don’t underestimate 40-45 at running. Is one of the hardest age group to compete. Btw I get your point. Would be interesting to have that word.

How about élite novice? It captures the idea of being exceptionally skilled compared to the general population, while acknowledging there's another level of mastery out there. It’s like reaching the summit of the first peak, knowing there’s a taller mountain just ahead.
