That's a very bad idea though. One by one, they will fall into the hands of either China, Russia, or the US. So long for Europe as an international independent power if this happens.

I wouldn't call them US puppets, especially given France history of non-alignment. There's a strong history of allyship between the two, and US being the strongest of the two, it's normal that they lead the coalition. But the history of European construction is also a history of emancipation from this US leadership, both military and economic. I don't think diversifying allegiances in this context is a road to more independence.
