i worked as a laborer for a general contractor my high school summers, so that was the sort of thing I was alluding to.

what kind of manual labor? he's in football season right now so that might suffice

Have them go to a poor country to build a school. Live with the families they are helping. 
Build real stuff, see people with real problems, appreciate much more.
