do you think bootstrapping as a first time founder to find some level of users or revenue is a better signal to VCs than just having a nice MVP and pitchdeck?

users (and better yet, customers) is always better than a nice MVP and pitchdeck. one of the biggest questions at the early stage is "do people really want this". It's very difficult to know until you try, so by having users/customers you de-risk this

Book recommendation: Traction, from the founder of DuckDuckGo. If I had to do it all again I'd spend zero time pitching in the first six months, just focus on building experiments and seeking traction. While revenue is best, it is not the only possible metric.

Capital can buy you growth it does not change the core metrics of the business. If you are bootstrapped with demonstrated PMF (strong engagement, high retention and low cost acquisition) then it is incredibly impressive. In such cases VCs would give you capital as capital can help you acquire users faster

Having users and revenue is strong. Additionally, the ability to launch products that follow trends, execution capability, and marketing strategy are important. Even if these have not been implemented, it is possible to conduct research and make plans.
