do you think bootstrapping as a first time founder to find some level of users or revenue is a better signal to VCs than just having a nice MVP and pitchdeck?

Capital can buy you growth it does not change the core metrics of the business. If you are bootstrapped with demonstrated PMF (strong engagement, high retention and low cost acquisition) then it is incredibly impressive. In such cases VCs would give you capital as capital can help you acquire users faster

However, another unfortunate truth to remember is that it is easier to sell the story than to sell actual metrics. A lot of times good stories make VCs project hockey stick adoption. However if you are live and your metrics are not good then VC funding will be much harder
