i don't think they'll have either of those problems, Apple is notorious for introducing extremely cringe behavioral patterns into the world that become status symbols, and if anything needs that, it's headsets.

what products have they ditched before?

not really a fair comparison, the iPod was the de facto music player for over a decade. it only experienced a decline because it was replaced by another Apple product, the iPhone.
