Quilibrium

I expect this to get a little bit of controversy so I wanted to start the discussion now:

Quilibrium’s codebase needs a license. We want to choose one that prevents Amazon grift — AWS should not be allowed to deploy an alt net either as a service or to power their own infra, but they are free to join the mainnet.

The AGPL seems like a good approach, except there’s clever legal strategies to play “I’m not touching you” games that would re-enable the Amazon grift.

One thing is clear though, it does need to be at least as strong as the AGPL — there are portions of the codebase indeed covered by the GPL.

For a long time, I had been considering something like the SSPL — Q, Inc. will not be the holder, but rather a separate foundation, so that the company does not get to commercialize the protocol directly by running an alt net either. The SSPL unfortunately hasn’t been properly tested, and feels unfairly vague.

Some thoughts:

- Amazon will be able to build a Q-like protocol once you publish the source, regardless of the license. The only way to prevent that would be with patents.

- Imho a better play is to make it irrelevant whether Amazon launches a private competitor.

The ultimate goal is to replace AWS and similar. If AWS can simply migrate their own infra to it with a private coin, the battle is lost. The license of the protocol should be independent of the license of the applications built on top of it.

some POV  :
- nice to be able to contribute on a tool that has no restrictions
-  base  protocol vs apps on top may have different licences
- a lot of infra may really benefit from the base protocol (other than aws)
