My hunt for useful onchain privacy solutions continues. I was disappointed to see that Nocturne shutdown before properly launching. I recently tested Railgun and, while clunky, it seems to be a promising approach for privacy preserving transactions on ETH mainnet. https://www.railgun.org/

everyone has a public private key pair, seems like an encrypted messaging service would be a no brainer?

that is a different use case from what I am referencing, which is obfuscating sender and recipients for a txn also, slight nit: ethereum provides addresses, which are not the same thing as public keys afaik the address is derived from the pub key, but is distinct which has implications for encrypting messages

The public keys do become known the instant a signature is provided for the address though, and since most people reuse addresses, the distinction is somewhat moot. Firn is a good privacy solution on Ethereum if you're looking for a comprehensive one.
