The difference between some of these individuals is they did not balance idealism with the law. Tornado cash had opt-in compliance at best, not to mention the developers were prosecuted in a country with a different set of laws, and had some reasonably damning conversations. In the United States, under present laws,

(Notwithstanding some absurdly stupid attempts at drafting new laws), we fulfill compliance obligations in a decentralized way with respect to the user having sufficient information when taking action to accept or reject fund transfers. Privacy is not a crime. Money laundering is.
