I wouldn't say openings matter a ton until like 2000/2100 chess.com rating (top 1%) and even then it's only to have a slight advantage in the middlegame. I think most people would have elo gains nearly ignoring openings completely and focusing on tactical ideas and not getting caught by tactical ideas.

If you're a super gm sure. Memorizing openings doesn't help us mortals as much. (Not that it doesn't help at all.)
