back from japan and going through all the photos! also coincidentally am on the market for new skis and bindings 👀 last day there was feeling frisky in 40cm of pow and dropped an extra large cornice at speed. one of my skis popped off and was lost to the mountain. Japan is the best though- nearby resort took all my info so fingers crossed they find & mail it to me in the summer! i was rocking shift bindings and am pretty sure the AFD shifted causing that ski to pre-release. I'd noticed some instability the day before but was suffering from pow-blindness. if you're also in them make sure to add the AFD to your pre-tour night checklist

Had the same issue with the shifts. Switched to the ATK Raider 13 EVO pin binding, and it's been an absolute game changer. It's the only tech/pin binding with a DIN on both toe and heel piece, and has very few moving parts so it doesn't jam up in powder.

oo i had just been looking at those! do you think it's worth waiting for ATK's Hy instead? early reviews show an oddly high toe height in walk mode but otherwise it's intriguing and closer to the shifts also how do you feel the Raider skis compared to downhill/hybrid bindings? I loved the power transfer and stability in the shifts, most AT bindings I've tried have felt wobbly. i generally optimize my setup for downhill and just spend extra days in the gym to make the uphill easier

The Freeraider 15 evo comes with a dedicated freeride spacer that touches your heel during the downhill and adds a ton of power transfer and stability on a steep or fast downhill. My ski shop added the spacer to my raider 13 evo’s, and that was the true unlock, where the difference is minimal. I’ll probably still get the HY11s when they come out next season and mount them on a set of all mountain ski’s like Head Kore/Salomon QST but only for day trip stuff or shorter tours.
