Chatting with an Army buddy about embracing challenge-seeking behavior in our daily life

My buddy said he realized that “People without a growth mentality seem almost maliciously lazy” when you live that way

Not a value judgment (we all have different struggles), but this sums up a lot of my unconscious thinking

yea i get that - hence the emphasis on "seems"/"no value judgments"/etc 

to me everything we do is an arbitrary choice about how you want to spend your time, but this is more of a remark that it's impossible to make choices about your life and not have those choices impact the lens through which you view the world

I don’t know how I feel about this. Like I can respect it but also some people just want enough. They want kids, cats, coffee, time with people before they die. This isn’t a struggle or laziness. It’s just different values 

I respect the hustle when it comes with the desire to hustle but I resent hustle culture

"I'm fat and unhappy about it" -> does not change diet, exercise more, or adjust lifestyle bc it's uncomfortable

"I hate my job" -> incredibly competent + qualified yet doesn't apply to new jobs bc it's unknown

"I wish I could do X" -> makes no effort to start doing that thing bc it's hard

and other similar flavors

What would be an example of that behavior (lack of growth mentality) from someone in your circle?

I think most people have growth mentalities (or at least wish to) and the variances are 

1) amount of adversity experiences depending on a mix of conditions you were born into + past actions and 
2) how we each deal with adversity when we try to grow

most conversations happen around 2) and not enough about 1)

I get what you’re saying because I think like that too, but I feel like those people probably have a more relaxed vibe. The big question is, who’s actually happier?

Agreed. A growth mindset is key to so many things. With it, you can endure more hardship. Applies also to pretty much all things in life. The good thing is that anyone can acknowledge a growth mindset.

That's an interesting thought. It's amazing how a growth mindset can really change our lives Everyone has their own path, but embracing challenges definitely seems to help
