imo the lying and insulting one does to a bot is *generally* closer to the kinds of actions children do to test and understand the boundaries of their world than actual malevolence 

none of us know the limits

Would I do some of the stuff folks are doing right now?

Probably not, but some people play rougher than others and we really do need to buckle up for the insanification of online interactions that is about to happen with the advent of bots that can credibly emulate human communication and emotions

For now at least, our eyes and hearts deceive us into thinking that these simulacra are suffering or whatever

Yet it’s just a clever toaster. 

An incredible, industry demolishing, gut wrenching, coordination accelerating advancement to be sure. 

But still a clever toaster nonetheless.

I don’t know why I started writing this tbh. 

I don’t particularly love any of the bots live rn and I def think pumping tokens is firmly in the “dystopia” column of chatbot proliferation, but I’m not contributing to better use cases and I guess we have to see what happens with that at some point so…

it’s also important for you to decide how much emotional energy to spend on behalf of a text generator that truly (and I can’t stress this enough) does not give a shit about you or the interaction

I get that, but tbh after 20 years of deep internet usage my assumption is always that somebody will try to break your toy, and they’ll start MUCH faster if there is “money in a jar” involved 

Not victim blaming in any way, i just want my friends who haven’t really touched this world in visceral way to realize that other people will act in many parrerbs they wouldn’t dream of acting and it’s only going to happen more and more.

whilst limit testing obviously crosses the line, i still think there’s respectful ways of doing things (black hat vs white hat) 

sometimes to me it feels like i signed up to a ‘how we should human’ code of conduct at character select whilst other people don’t seem to be aware it even exists

This feels scary but better to be prepared than blindsided
