“I’m super excited to announce that >150 million Americans are on TikTok. That’s almost half of the US!” — TikTok CEO Translation: “The CCP has a direct line to 150M Americans, and I’ll highlight the # instead of the data we harvest from them.” https://twitter.com/mamachell/status/1638184321604280320

Honestly in the spirit of capitalism and democracy I don’t really care. If the US wants to win, it needs to ship better social apps. If people are actually upset about privacy, let them vote. Restricting technology has always been a loser’s game.

Is there any argument here or take on the mental impact, focus etc tiktok is having? Should apps really be able to design free-reign even at the detriment of society?

Socrates on the invention of writing “If men learn this, it will implant forgetfulness in their souls; they will cease to exercise memory because they rely on that which is written, calling things to remembrance no longer from within themselves, but by means of external marks.” New tech is scary to big brains

But to be more specific - I think managing effects is crucial, but understanding that the lightning is loose on short form video is the takeaway. Punting by banning the winner just shifts the problem of relearning what it means to be human and happy until Meta gives us the same enema. It’s wasted cycles 🫡

“Socrates” was 100% correct though. Writing irreparably changed human memory and also poetry as an art form.

I knowwwwww i knowww and the luddites. But there must be an exception, or rather not ALL tech is good, right? On a smaller scale: don’t individuals that spend less time mindlessly scrolling have an advantage? I am not pro ban btw. I’m pro…well not sure. the thought of 150M ppl scrolling tiktok is a scary
