Hot take: all New York Jews should be allowed to eat rice on Passover like the Sephardim. 

The first synagogue in our city — in our entire country, really — was founded by Sephardic Jews from
Portugal via Brazil. Those of us in the Ashkenazi majority should claim we are honoring the roots of our community by eating rice.
