I *should* be taking notes on the Aristotle readings for the Social & Political Philosophy class, or reading the chapter for Neuroethics and studying the brain structures for the quiz, or working on a lab assignment for Human Origins and Prehistory, or reading the chapters for Anthropology of Religion... Instead, I'm dicking around on Farcaster, Midjourney, and ChatGPT 🤣 But really... that's just false mental rush... that ingrained urgency... the *should* in there... that's a bad word in my language 😘 None of those things are due today. Or tomorrow. Most are due Sunday. I know how long it takes me to do those things, I know how to pace myself, and I know that I need dopamine in order to be able to do them. Which I build up by dicking around on Farcaster, Midjourney, and ChatGPT. So much of our rush is internal, not external. Yes, we have deadlines, but we also need to work *with* ourselves, not trying to rush ourself beyond our capacity or out of where we need to be.

Learning to discern between real and self-imposed rush was a big theme for me in my early days of freelancing! Similar to working seasonally, it took me going through the same patterns several times to start understanding the cycles and where I can break them/do something different. A lot of activities that give us dopamine are called procrastination but I think you’re absolutely right in seeing them as the necessary fuel to get work done.
