Upside: opportunity to contribute to another entity and share your “time, talent, & treasure” foster deeper connections within a community further develop your social skill set aka navigating politics of organizations often filled with passionate folk.

downside: time to invest is quite often very real. would suggest you gauge an accurate estimation of time per month and depending on how well you know the org there should be a deep engagement from the outset to get up to speed quick. Advisory boards can be a nice step if they aren’t just used for window dressing.
