We moved a couple of rocks today; first time really using strength muscles in months and months. The joys of New England soils.

We have a mini-chisel which works a bit like a subsoiled, working the soil ~9 inches down and helpful for breaking up a plow pan that can form from the tiller. It’s also a champ at identifying where the bigger rocks are in the fields. If we use it, we’ll then use a rock bar and shovel to work the rocks we are able out of the soil and either lift or roll them into the bucket. Functionally this creates quite a bit of work in the rockier sections, so we don’t do this for all the beds every year. Today I “ripped” an acre; about two thirds of which are in less rocky sections and a third are in fields which yield some larger boulders. Only picked rock from a few beds that we are going to plant this week; the other beds we’ll pick when the time is right the next couple of weeks. Turn back to when we had some help with a back hoe, and found this - too big to remove, just dig a bit deeper hole and roll it in and bury it.

The good news is when it’s done it’s done! They’re not like weeds that come back 😂
