I appreciate when we examine a conventional idea, debunk it, present an alternative, and then defend that new perspective. On social media, it's common to skip straight to the unconventional idea, as though conventional challenges never existed. This mental bypass isn't exclusive to social media. https://x.com/paulg/status/1802303430322471025

Is it unconventional though? All I see is PG calling for better city governance and Elon calling for legislative change, which is all pretty obvious, no?

The claim PG made is stronger than that. People who study SF problems will often point to multiple issues, some unrelated to governance. You can simply paste his tweet into ChatGPT to get a sense of conventional belief. That median city governance would eliminate all these problems isn’t obvious. Perhaps specious. Most experts are too nuanced to claim that.

I’d like to be clear. I’m not saying that convention is necessarily correct. I also don’t think that PG is necessarily wrong here. I’m just weary of this pattern of casually claiming edgy ideas without the reasoning. To me it’s ironic. “Essay PG” would insist in walking you through the hard reasoning. “Twitter PG” wouldn’t give you the time of day.
