What would be a more interesting color scheme?

Like this. Support the call to just focus on Manhattan and Brooklyn.

I'd 1) use a consistent font (different colors are enough) and 2) use a more interesting color scheme.

It’s missing a lot and the proportions are way off

Where are the entire boroughs of Staten Island, the Bronx, and Queens? Where’s Harlem? You’re missing like 60-70% of the population of the city.

Have never been! Figured I’d keep the NESW bounds to neighborhoods I’ve visited in Manhattan & Brooklyn
