Pre-ordering video games used to have a specific purpose: Make sure you get a physical copy of a game before it sells out. Today, we have infinite digital distribution. It depends on the game, I would argue, and their previous track record. GTA 6 I'll happily pre-order. Pre-orders tend to get early access now as well.

preorders used to come with a bunch of bonus content that was really helpful in-game. sometimes preorders even had a physical collectible too. i don’t remember when the editions meta (standard, deluxe, collector, etc) came into play but i think that also contributed to the decline in preorders.

And people got burned too many times on pre orders for unfinished games - cyberpunk, call of duty, etc

I still preorder to get some extra perks. Doesn’t come with the same emotional feeling though, doesn’t feel special because of the lack of scarcity. Maybe NFT’s can bring this feeling back though 👀

In many markets outside US, buying physical is up to a ~30% discount to digital, so there is still incentive to preorder. The bigger contributors are 1) as some mentioned in the comments; the release of unfinished games and 2) a rapid discounting strategy by almost every publisher, also due to release dates near xmas.

Not necessarily, games often offer exclusive skins, items, or collector's editions for preordering.
