Pre-ordering video games used to have a specific purpose: Make sure you get a physical copy of a game before it sells out. Today, we have infinite digital distribution. preorders used to come with a bunch of bonus content that was really helpful in-game. sometimes preorders even had a physical collectible too. i don’t remember when the editions meta (standard, deluxe, collector, etc) came into play but i think that also contributed to the decline in preorders.
