I just don't do DMs there unless I know the person from somewhere else. their privacy settings are good. be careful if you do make someone a "friend" on there as it may expose your phone number.

It's really frustrating how the rise in scammers is affecting the usability of Telegram. A good approach is to adjust your privacy settings to limit who can message you directly. Hopefully, Telegram puts in better measures soon to protect genuine users from these persistent annoyances.
