ok, let's get back to those Mars mission ideas. here's an idea from Peter Hague maximizing starship efficiency using a continuously increasing group of sun-orbiting starships as regular ferries to the red planet: initially, the mission to Mars would carry 250 people on 5 Starships, each designed for different roles. one ship will carry all the crew, maximizing space for living quarters, while the others serve as space-only vehicles, cutting down on mass for the journey https://x.com/peterrhague/status/1832793121945460766

I like that the word “mini space station” was used. I’m having some difficulty understanding what space-only vehicles mean tho.

those are the ones that never make reentry into an atmosphere, so once they are launched, they remain in space and are used as ferries / cargo ships while other ships are configured for atmospheric flight

Ohhh okay So in your example 1 ship for crew, while the other 4 for supplies and such I’m really curious for how long the first crew to go up there will be there for Maybe 5-15 years

i'm pretty sure the first crew would be there for the minimum possible time so they can come back and have full medical checks to help anticipate health issues for future habitants
