crypto is expensive, l2 is cheaper crypto L1 is like if the postman came to ur house, got mail, went back to post office, then to ur neighbors then back to post office…. an optimistic roll up l2 == postman can go door to door to get all the mail and bring a batch of it back to the post office

L1 is like the big shop at the mall. L2 is like the little shop in your local neighbourhood. You can get the same items from both, but the L2 is cheaper, quicker, more convenient. The same way you wouldn't go to the mall every time you need a item, you wouldn't use an L1 for all your transactions.

Say you run a pawn shop. You give money to some customers in return for items, and you give items to others in return for money. You keep a running ledger of all those transactions, many of which offset each other. You then drop off the residual balance to the bank once a week. You don’t do that after every customer

Imagine the blockchain is a road, each intersecting block is a “block” on the chain. When each transaction is in a car (comparable to L1), you can’t fit very many per block, but if you substitute cars for busses full of people (L2s submit bundled transactions), you get far more transactions per block.
