L1 is like the big shop at the mall. L2 is like the little shop in your local neighbourhood. You can get the same items from both, but the L2 is cheaper, quicker, more convenient. The same way you wouldn't go to the mall every time you need a item, you wouldn't use an L1 for all your transactions.

Say you run a pawn shop. You give money to some customers in return for items, and you give items to others in return for money. You keep a running ledger of all those transactions, many of which offset each other. You then drop off the residual balance to the bank once a week. You don’t do that after every customer

It’s a question I have been thinking a lot. The best metaphor I have come up with is: Ethereum: the Commonwealth L2s: independent nations associated with the Commonwealth sharing some institutions/values/laws Appchains: metropolitan cities of the nations

If a transaction is like a person going from point A to B on a railway, then an L2 is like a train that can carry many folks. Transacting directly on L1 is like using a handcar.
