without using any technical terms, how would you describe what an L2 is to somebody?

Say you run a pawn shop. You give money to some customers in return for items, and you give items to others in return for money. You keep a running ledger of all those transactions, many of which offset each other. You then drop off the residual balance to the bank once a week. You don’t do that after every customer
