I noticed that open source seems to come natural for folks based out of Berlin. Any theories as to why? When I was hiring applicants out of Berlin had a notable open source contributions. Their projects are often well structured with clear instructions for contributions. Many open source / paid hosted products.

(1/2 ) Great observation! Recently chatted with @nintynick.eth about this. Decentralization and Open Source fit perfectly into Berlin's narrative. Berlin's culture is big time defined by it's anti mainstream, anti-capitalist thinking that emerged in the 90s after the wall came down. Imho this culture emerged out of necessity not romanticism. Berlin is poor compared to other German cities due to the economic vacuum after the collapse of the USSR. After the wall came down the city was "ON SALE" for foreign investors and people from the West – like southern Germany where I am from. What do you do when you see that others take what was yours but is not yours anymore because the new system (Capitalism) now says it's not yours because you didn't pay for it? You start swimming against the tide... (tbc in the next cast)

(2/2) The 90s are the birthplace of Berlin's counter culture. The narrative of "reclaiming" is everywhere. Don't let anyone take away our public goods. Our public goods are not a margin. And they are not your opportunity. When Amazon built their new offices in Berlin you saw graffitis all over the city that said: The wrong Amazon is burning. Maybe you have seen my "xyz wegbassen" posts in the Berlin channel? "Wegbassen" means to "bass-away something" – with the sound of Techno. Originally it's a meme from the Anti-Faschism movement. Don't get me wrong. Berlin is growing up. Just being anti-mainstream doesn't get anyone very far. Berlin has to become economically mature. I don't see myself at all part of the counter culture. But I am a fan of it. Because we have to learn from it. I feel counter culture is one of most important assets we have in Berlin. And it attracts people that are drawn to some sort of alternatives. Like Open Source.
