Dazed and Confused came out in 1993 and was based in 1976. A comparable movie today would be based in 2007 The reason that 1976 seems much more distant from 1993 than 2007 does from 2024 is that the internet has trapped us in a cultural forever-present, unable to move into the future because the things of the past never fade from sight. We inhabit a static, stuck, ersatz culture.

i just watched twilight for the first time and while the first movieโs effects do look like shit, the fashion and tropes arenโt that different. we need more art. weโve become stuck in backwards looking financial optimization especially in cinรฉma for too long. new new wave lets go

To produce interesting novel art and stories a society needs a robust middle class, that is: lots of people with the tools and instruments to produce art and ample time to get good at their tools and instruments When the majority of US citizens are living paycheck to paycheck, all weโre gonna get is drug and suicide epidemics Itโs not gonna get any better because weโre living in the middle of an extinction event of the middle class in the United States
