We should also talk about American businesses and people who compromise on ethics to do business in China.

Facebook doesn’t have a military, it isn’t an arm of the govt. CCP = risk of imprisonment or death if you say the wrong thing and restrictions on physical mobility, another. Facebook can be weaponized but it isn’t itself, a weapon.

The largest surveillance state or operation outside of the CCP, is it not? May not have a military at the moment but how many degrees away is that reality?

the concept of surveillance is weighted by the arm of the state: retribution, harm, punishment, loss of liberty. surveillance and “surveillance capitalism” are different things.

Yea I’m all for ending the ad model of the internet (hence why I’m here 😃) but nobody living in China or North Korea would ever confuse western surveillance capitalism with what they experience.

a company cannot militarize on US soil control bank accounts, seize assets or prevent you from leaving your house without state support backed by the threat of violence. at which point they become extensions of each other all in the public sector, like it is in China. atoms rule bits.
