tiktok will replace google i am part of gen-z, i know many people who are gen-z, i've seen it first hand kids (10-25yo) explicitly saying that they'll look up their question on tiktok instead of google because they get better information

Yeah, I’m just countering u with another yet to come fact. You suspect zoomers are all gonna opt in to buying Chinese locale iOS devices to have TikTok when it’s banned?

not so sure it will be banned. Would be very politically unsavvy to do so if you want to attract younger voters.

Would be hugely negative for innovation in America if they did so. Similar to sanctions on Russia damaging the reputation of the dollar. Banning apps that have 100m users would be an incredibly foolish thing to do from a strategic perspective.

Yeah but we’re in unprecedented times, harmful viral trends proliferate at lightning speeds on that app and if it truly is an appendage or proxy of the CCP then I do not believe it to be foolish to ban at all. But I also support banning Instagram and Facebook and threads and hell even Twitter at this point.

I think like you've said viral trends happen on all social media. Banning one just means that they proliferate on another. I do honestly think its not something a government can control, you just need to give people the tools to spot and understand that media is likely to be innacurate. No real good solution imo.

still in the camp that Social Media is largely a net good for society though

I think sufficiently neutral social media designed to be actually enhance our lives would be a net good for society. However, the parasitic attention stealing models we are living through today are largely detrimental in my experience.
