I suspect a lot of people here will read this and think “web3 solves this.” But the problem isn’t one of decentralization or centralization. It’s one of incentives and convenience. A demand for convenience has shifted incentives for products to be subscription based.

There was a realization in the mid 00s that subscriptions were much easier because of card-on-file (which had just recently become possible to do programmatically). They were sticky. Consumers underestimated the cost and/or forgot about subscriptions. Then it turned out to be even more true for enterprise SaaS. And now it’s just an easy business playbook at this point. The infra is all built out. 100% agree it’s nothing to do with web2 vs web3. It’s just programmatic payments plus human psychology.
