I was a manager at the time, had a great reputation, was seen as an expert in my domain. someone told me if I wanted to advance, I had to make a shift so I was seen as an authority, not an expert. Subtle nudge, but was really helpful.

I’ll try. Experts are seen as super helpful and valuable but you don’t get promoted into senior leadership roles by just being an expert. I needed to demonstrate ability to set vision, make decisions, and execute on them. Needed to be seen as someone with authority to make decisions.
